2006-12-26 21:51 - BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0

I just got me a brand new HP Pavillion DV9000 series laptop. Today, all of a sudden it refused to boot. This message was shown on the console while booting:

BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0

After some Googling people mentioned this message after inserting a WiFi card. I did just the opposite, though. The message started to appear when I booted with my WiFi card disabled by means of the kill switch at the front. Re-enabling the WiFi card was the solution. If my WiFi is turned on when I boot, my laptop boots just fine!

This may also be caused by USB drives attached to your Ubuntu(-based) upun upgrading to Edgy. Solution is to unplug them before wherever this message occurs.

Thanks for the reply. However, I didn't upgrade to Edgy - it was a clean install. At the time there also weren't any USB drives attached to the laptop.

Hi, i have the same problem: Hp nx9005, if i plug the wifi card i got a soft cpu lock (while booting or with the desktop).

Seems something is gonna to happen with kernel 2.6.20 end up. People think it's a problem in reading termal sersor of WiFi card... do you have any news?

I haven't seen this issue with the latest Kubuntu version. It could be a software issue that's fixed, or perhaps they've installed a workaround. Try updating to the latest version of your distribution, it might help.

I'm having the same "soft lockup detected on cpu0!" error on two systems all of the sudden.

Neither one has a USB drive or wi-fi, and there have been no other hardware changes to either one.

Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA

Which Ubundu version do you have? Which kernel version on which hardware?
