2007-05-11 14:33 - Calculating with OpenOffice.org

Joachim Dahl asked me to give an example of using OpenOffice.org spreadsheet formulas from Python. After a bit of digging I found out that it's rather easy. I've added a section to my "OpenOffice.org & Python" document called Calculating with OpenOffce.org which gives a simple example of how it's done.

Hey there.. in fifty words or less, how would you answer this question.. I have a company with 234 staff, in London, all use word and excel, some advanced, some not.. I have been asked (i'm the IT Manager) if I'll think about putting in OpenOffice 2.2... v's buying a site license for M$ office (£80k)... Thoughts?.. considering we interact with people using ms everyday, we have a high staff turn over and nobody to train new starters on oO2.2.. random question, I know :) Sime (DPS) www.gtvone.com

You might want to start things off by giving a woman (important!) a training in OpenOffice.org. After that, let her announce to the other collegues (including the males) that it's easy to work with OpenOffice.org. Most males won't complain about it being difficult, since it's been publicly announced to be easy by a woman ;-)

I think you'll at least have to create a migration plan, and get training for both the new and the existing staff. Another idea is to hand out USB sticks with OpenOffice.org installed on it. If you use OpenOffice.org Portable people won't have to install anything, it'll just run from the stick.
